The Kennewick Fire Department fought a fire in a portable classroom Monday evening, according to a press release from Fire Chief Chad Michael.
Michael says crews were sent to the 400 block of West Railroad Avenue at 6:39 p.m. for reports of a structure fire, though it was later upgraded to a residential fire.
Crews found heavy smoke coming from a classroom portable sitting next to several other portables within 50 feet of a large commercial building. Crews began extinguishing the fire and searched for anyone stuck inside the portable. Michael reports that no one was found inside; however, evidence shows that someone had previously broken in and was using the portable as a home. Crews believe the fire was human caused; however, the exact cause is still under investigation.
