VIDEO: The traditional wildfire season is right around the corner in Washington state, just as some experts are saying the idea of wildfire seasons is out of date. "Reminders of the immediate need to address this crisis are all too frequent, from the recent fires in Texas, and Hawaii, to the smoky skies experienced last summer,” said Joan M. Mooney from the US Department of the Interior during testimony before Congress. Right now, our state is low on snowpack just as the spring melt-off is set to begin next month. Federal researchers said snowpack levels in our state vary from 57% of typical in the Olympic Mountains to 64 to 71% of normal in other parts of our state. Less melting snow could mean dry conditions later this year and an increased threat of wildfires.
