State Fire Mobilization Authorized for the North Wenas Fire in Yakima County

State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters working to contain the North Wenas Fire located in Yakima County, near the town of Selah. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources on July 22, 2024, at 9:30 p.m. at the request of Fire Chief Jim Lange, Yakima County Fire District 2. The North Wenas Fire started on July 22, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m. This fire is estimated at 1,500 acres and growing. It is burning in old growth, sage, and cheatgrass and is threatening homes, the electrical grid, irrigation, and cultural areas. Level 3 evacuations are in effect at this time. The fire cause is currently under investigation.
