According to the National Weather Service, the drier winter puts us at a deficit going into fire season because there's a concern that our region will dry out faster. The Yakitat fire that happened last June caused several homeowners to evacuate their homes, including Tamie Watkins of Kiona, Washington. "They came and said, 'You have to evacuate.' So, we evacuated, we went down to the high school where the evacuation site was. We were there for probably two or three hours, I would say. It was not fun, at all," Watkins said. According to Benton County Fire District One, that fire burned on Yakitat Road near I-82 between Benton City and Prosser. Ben Shearer with Pasco Fire said that previous wildfire areas can still burn just as easily a second time.
