VIDEO: Spokane firefighters were called to a fire in someone's backyard last week, saying the fire was made worse by their choice in shrubbery. All that's left are burnt branches which were once arborvitae, a popular but problematic plant. It's known to easily ignite and torch, leaving a burnt scene dangerously close to multiple homes. Luckily, firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire. Justin de Ruyter with the Spokane Fire Department says SFD is aiming to be proactive about fire prevention, given recent local and national fires. "I think moving forward, distance, and the home ignition zone, and how close do you want certain types of vegetation to your home and out building, and general clean-up is going to start getting on people's minds around here," de Ruyter said.
