Local firefighters are in need of saving. Yakima County Fire District 5 (YFD5) says they've run out of money to replace outdated equipment and make stations reasonable for their hardworking firefighters. Geographically, fire district 5 is the largest district in the state. It was incorporated in 1947 and since then, fire leaders say they have never had to ask for a tax increase. However, due to inflation and an increase in call volumes, they're now in desperate need. This November there will be a bond measure on ballots. If passed, it will help renovate three of their decades-old stations. "Our firefighters are going out; they're being exposed to carcinogen from fires or from medical exposures and they come back to the fire station, and they don't have adequate places to decontaminate. Additionally, we don't have any sleeping quarters in our fire stations," said YFD5 Chief Ken Shipman.
