Sunday was the first day of national fire prevention week, with this year's focus on preventing fires from starting in your kitchen along with cooking safety tips.
The theme of this fire prevention week is 'Cooking safety starts with You,' which focuses on safety aspects of fire prevention in the kitchen.
The fire chief of East Valley Fire Department says almost fifty percent of house fires begin in the kitchen.
Chief Dale Hille shares these safety tips, when cooking should a grease fire start. "Always have a lid available to slide onto a pan that you're cooking with that's big enough to cover that," said Dale Hille, the fire chief at East Valley Fire Department. "[The] easiest way to put out a grease fire is [to] slide a pan or something over the top. Never throw flour on it, never throw anything on top, and above all, do not put water on that fire. It won't stop the fire, it will spread the fire."
