Earlier this year, Public Lands Commissioner Hillary Franz said this year’s fire season could see drier conditions than 2022. We spoke with her and asked her how the fire season has gone. "This fire season has been significant," Franz said. According to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources website, 1,855 fires have been counted across the state this year. But the number of acres burned is not as high as you would think. DNR is reporting 155,503 acres have burned in Washington this year. Even with large fires like the Gray and Oregon Road up in Spokane earlier this year, Franz says that 95% of fires have been contained to under 10 acres. The goal at the beginning of the year was 90. She says attacking fires through the air has helped.
