VIDEO/PHOTOS: One firefighter was injured responding to a large fire at a vacant building Tuesday night in the Columbia City neighborhood of Seattle, according to the Seattle Fire Department (SFD). The SFD said callers reported heavy smoke from a commercial building with boarded-up windows and doors in the 4200 block of Rainier Avenue South around 6:30 p.m. As firefighters arrived on the scene, officials said they reported flames visible through the roof of the 300-by-100-foot building. The department said it then upgraded the response and dispatched a total of 11 fire engines, five ladder trucks, and more than 80 firefighters to the scene. After prying open an entrance into the building, the SFD said heavy smoke, high heat, and a roof collapse caused firefighters to adjust their defensive strategy to dousing the flames with water from a safe distance away.
