Two accidents in North Smithfield on Sunday led to serious injuries for those involved and delays for others traveling on Route 146 and Great Road. The first was an accident involving two motorcycles and a car at the intersection of Route 146 southbound and Sayles Hill Road in the early afternoon on Sunday. North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Chief David Chartier said that both motorcycle drivers sustained serious injuries and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital. The busy intersection is the site of some 85 accidents each year according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, and a major rehabilitation project is currently underway to improve safety in the area and allow cars to avoid the traffic light via a bridge.
