VIDEO: Even during the hottest summer days, first responders still have to take emergency calls. Lucky for them, there's a dedicated team that responds to major incidents to help them stay hydrated. Providence Canteen Supervisor Joe Phillips said the non-profit has been operating since 1968, providing on-site support during emergencies and other critical situations. Over the years, the need for this resource has not declined. Phillips said at times when all trucks are tied up, volunteers will use their own cars to provide support. "Bottom line, we’ve been very very busy with all the incidents and calls going out and everything else,” said Phillips. From Wednesday morning's fire in Warren to the Pawtucket-Central Falls Mill fire in 2022, the canteens are usually right behind the fire trucks. They can be on scene for a few hours, or a few days.
