A man suffered second- and third-degree burns in a fire at Parenti Villa, a facility for elderly and handicapped residents operated by the Providence Housing Authority. According to Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva, firefighters received the alarm at 3:16 p.m. Sunday for a fire at 25 Tobey St. Firefighters arrived at the scene four minutes later, Silva said, and immediately began to investigate the fifth floor, where they found a bedroom fire in one of the apartments. In the chief’s words, “The fire had been contained by the building’s sprinkler system and was completely extinguished by firefighters.” Silva said the victim, 76, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with what appeared to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He credited “the quick arrival and work of the firefighters” for bringing the fire to a quick end and saving a life.
