VIDEO/PHOTO: First responders remained at the scene of a large fire off Allens Avenue in Providence. A thick plume of smoke could be seen for miles after a pile of scrap metal caught fire around 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rhode Island Recycled Metals. Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva told 12 News that kind of fire can be hard to extinguish, so crews were expected to be on scene for several hours. The southbound side of Allens Avenue was back up to two lanes, but one of the northbound lanes remained closed as of 2:30 p.m. No injuries have been reported. Firefighters were being rotated out since the heat was a concern. Silva said they called in the R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and U.S. Coast Guard to check for pollution, while a hazmat team was monitoring the air quality. No issues have been found so far, according to the chief.
