Sunday marked one year since the fire that destroyed a historic Block Island hotel.
The Harborside Inn has been demolished after it was deemed a total loss due to heavy damage from the fire that started the night of Aug. 18, 2023.
Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen of the Harbor Grill on the second level. While the exact cause of the fire is still unclear, the fire marshal’s report identified some factors that allowed the flames to quickly spread, namely a buildup of grease in the cooking area.
The investigation into the fire continues, but the owner has plans to rebuild. A proposal was brought to the Historical District Commission on Monday for final approval.
Block Island’s Town Manager said they have also been working to build a new public safety complex, but it’s still in the early stages.
