East Providence officials announced that their fire department will go PFAS-free after the city council voted to purchase new gear. According to officials, East Providence will become the first in the state to eliminate fire equipment with polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. Mayor Bob DaSilva said he will purchase new turnout gear that will protect the health and wellness of fire crews in the city. PFAS, which are often dubbed as “forever chemicals,” have been classified as a human carcinogen, according to health officials. “Our Administration is committed to ensuring we provide the best public safety services available while at the same time protecting those men and women who deliver these services for our residents,” DaSilva said in a statement.
