VIDEO: The Limerick Fire Department's tenth annual "Youth Firefighter Camp" is underway in Montgomery County.
The camp gives 160 kids a look at what it's like to be a volunteer firefighter.
Participants are between the ages 6-13. They get hands-on experience with equipment, watch arson-dog demonstrations, and develop home fire safety plans. The fire chief says one of the camp's goals is to raise awareness about the volunteer fire service at an early age.
"So, if they don't join here… maybe they join somewhere else," said Ken Shuler, Limerick Fire Department chief. "Keep the volunteer fire service alive — which in turn, these days, could turn into a career for somebody."
The camp runs daily from 8:45 to noon, through Friday.
