It starts with a puff of smoke. While most of us would run from a burning building, 50 volunteer West Chester Fire Department firefighters are rushing in the opposite direction. Recently I saw some firefighters enter a burning building to snuff out smoking wood pallets and hay. While I listened to veteran firefighters answer a reporter’s questions, I watched as those heroes practiced putting out fires at the West Chester Fire Department Training Center on Snyder Avenue in West Goshen. Why does Tom Barton, board member of the West Chester Fire Company and past president of the First West Chester Fire Company, why he risks himself to save lives and property. He answered with a question.
