Fire severely damages Fifty Licks Ice Cream shop in Northeast Portland

A fire severely damaged Fifty Licks Ice Cream at its Northeast Portland location at East Burnside and 28th Avenue on Friday morning. Portland Fire & Rescue said the fire spread from the basement up to the top floor of the 100-year-old building. Fire crews said the building layout and thick smoke made it tough to find the source and put it out. Several apartments and two other businesses, a salon and a vintage shop, in the building were also damaged. No one was injured and fire crews rescued a cat from one of the apartments. Chad Draizin, the owner of Fifty Licks, said fire crews went above and beyond to help his store. "The firefighters were in there slogging through the wet, doing a bucket brigade, rescuing our ice cream, and loading it into our ice cream truck. They invented the bucket brigade and they have it perfected," he said.

Firefighters battle blaze at Schnitzer Steel in North Portland

Firefighters battled a blaze at Schnitzer Steel in North Portland that generated lots of smoke. However, there are so far no reported injuries nor is the fire impacting any buildings, officials said. The source of the fire was from an industrial metal shredder at the facility on North Lombard Street, according to Portland Fire and Rescue. Lt. Laurent Picard, a spokesperson with PF&R, confirmed to KOIN 6 News just before 5 p.m. that the fire was coming from a “large debris pile of shredded combustible mixed metals,” including items like shredded cars with petroleum products, foam and upholstery. “This is an exterior debris pile with no structural involvement to the building, but due to the nature of the materials burning, the fire is producing a large volume of smoke,” Picard said.

La Pine Fire District Looks For Levy Renewals

La Pine voters will decide on two measures funding the Rural Fire Protection District, on May 21st. “I think with this being an essential and emergent service, people understand how critical that is, especially when you're dealing with the very time sensitive functions between getting to a hospital, and then also the time sensitive nature of just dealing with fire suppression,” Fire Chief Erick Holsey tells KBND News. Also, La Pine’s growing population means more emergency calls. Holsey says, “We have to replace our ambulances at a faster rate than average. Generally, it's about 250,000 miles or seven years of service and we can reach 250,000 miles on our ambulances probably closer to five.” Holsey goes on to say that both levies have been continuously renewed going back decades.
