It's been through a few years of review and planning, but voters in the Champlain Fire District approved the fire company's request to build a new fire station. The vote tally was 173 yes votes to 118 against on May 16.
The new station will be built on property the department has already purchased near the intersection of NY-11 and NY-9 in Champlain.
Total project costs total $6,950,000, but fire department reserve funds reduce the amount to $6,735,000. The project is secured with a USDA loan offer at 3.5 percent interest over 30 years.
The proposed Fire District tax rate for the project would add $1.096 per thousand dollars of real property value.
"Thank you to the citizens in the Champlain Fire District, and all who came out to vote along with supporting us on this journey," district commissioners said in announcing voter approval.
