VIDEO: Following series of winter storms and icy conditions that brought record-breaking snow to the northern Nevada region, the Reno Fire Department (RFD) is reminding the public that icy ponds and lakes can be deadly. On Wednesday, RFD conducted training exercises for emergency ice rescue calls. Captain Kevin Joell with the Reno Fire Department and Water Entry Team (RFD WET) says the best way to avoid becoming a victim of the ice is to stay off the ice completely. RFD WET trains regularly in river rescues, still water and ice rescues. Every few years they teach the remainder of the department in water rescue skills. Having all department members trained in the initial response to an ice rescue call presents the best chance for a positive outcome for an individual trapped in broken ice.
