When Steven McGill took over as chief of the Jersey City Fire Department, he had already made up his mind to bring the department up to the highest possible standards as far as fire protection.
Although it didn’t happen overnight, the department made significant strides over the next year or two, and finally, this week, his department became one of the top one percent in fire protection nationwide.
On May 4, the Jersey City Fire Department was officially awarded Public Protection Classification 01 from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) at a ceremony commemorating the Department’s historic achievement. This is the first time in the Jersey City Fire Department’s 151-year history that it received a Class 1 designation.
