Thousands of people lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks; members of the Wilmington Fire Department gathered to remember the victims. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, a ceremony was held at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Wilmington. Members of the Wilmington Fire Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Wilmington Police Department were all in attendance. “It was such a historic day in the history of our nation,” said Steve Mason, Fire Chief for the City of Wilmington. Many people just like Mason remember exactly what they were doing the moment they saw the first airplane hit the World Trade Center north tower. “The news was on and I saw the first jet fly into the World Trade Center and of course, I knew that was a tragedy in itself,” said Patrick Campbell, Battalion Chief for the WFD.
