Lindenhurst firefighters travel 753 miles to aid storm-hit Western North Carolina

PHOTOS: Firefighters drove 753 miles from a small town on Long Island to bring their storm recovery experience and help Western North Carolina recover from Helene. The Lindenhurst Fire Department put out a call to their area and got an incredible response. Heike Santos, the wife of First Assistant Chief Robert Santos, said they saw the devastation and knew they needed to do something. "We were having our regular cup of coffee, we saw the news coming in, and I said, 'They need help," saidHeike Santos. "We basically started the process and got together with the fire department, which was amazing." Robert Santos, First Assistant Chief of the Lindenhurst Fire Department, said they know what Asheville is going through because of their experience with Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
