First responders in Durham are set to get more money this year as the need grows with more people moving to the city.
This comes after several months of pleas from police and fire for additional funds.
Durham firefighters like Teekie Majors put their lives on the line every single day, all while working multiple jobs on top of the role. “It’s a lot of other guys and girls in the department who have two or three jobs,” Majors said. “We have to just to make ends meet.”
These firefighters are about to get a pay raise with the proposed Durham city budget. For example, an entry level recruit making just over $41,000 now will make more than $45,000. And the pay goes up to almost $52,000 after graduation.
