VIDEO: When the call comes out, firefighters in Greenville must always be ready to go.
Captain Eric Smith with Greenville Fire/Rescue says, "this time of year with the increased temperatures, humidity, it’s really tough on firefighters."
It can sometimes mean battling a fire that's over a thousand degrees, in 90 degree heat, with the gear firefighters wear adding around an extra 80 pounds of weight.
Dr. Rochelle Asagbra with ECU Health says that's why staying hydrated is a top priority for firefighters.
"We want to make sure you’re getting plenty of fluids, and that can involve anywhere from eight to 10 glasses of water a day," said Dr. Asagbra.
Captain Smith says hydration is a top priority each day for firefighters across Greenville.
Greenville fire officials also say fridges are stocked with water and ice, as well as on fire trucks.
