The national EMT shortage is forcing the industry to make changes when it comes to recruiting and sustaining its workers. These effects are being felt at the local level in Missoula, too.
According to Missoula Emergency Services paramedic supervisor Jeff Welch, the worst staffing period was when the pandemic was coupled with wildfire season.
“We had some people that were out on a fire assignment for the wildland fire, so that is short that direction. And then really just because of COVID itself,” said Welch.
Missoula Emergency Services is seeing an uptick in applicants and staff. “We've just hired three more in the last two weeks, and we have some paramedic students that are employed with us now that we'll finish up with December,” said Welch.
