A vacant old school building in Kirksville caught fire Wednesday evening.
The blaze at the former Washington School at the corner of Harrison and Florence streets was reported around 7:30 p.m.
Smoke could be seen coming from the roof and second-story windows of the old school that used to be home to students in grades K thru 3.
No flames were visible from the outside.
In recent years, a portion of the building had served as someone's residence, but owner Charles Tharp told KTVO that no one has lived there for several months.
Tharp says the building has no electricity, so he told police someone had to have intentionally set it.
Some were saying that homeless people had been staying in the vacant school, but KTVO has been unable to confirm that with authorities.
