It’s been a record-breaking hot summer, and dry conditions are becoming a fire concern across Northern Michigan. With much of the region at very high or extreme risk of fire, burn permits are not being issued and fire departments want people to be aware just how easily a fire can start. A spark from a lawnmower blade or even parking a running car over dry material could start a fire. While campfires are allowed at the moment, Cherry Grove Township Fire Department said that could change based on conditions. Fire Chief Noah Knauf suggest checking the DNR’s burn permit website for up-to-date conditions and restrictions in your county. “It will tell you by township where you’re allowed to burn. Make sure that we’re not burning trash, or using accelerants and make sure that we have a hand line for water,” said Knauf.
