VIDEO: A fire at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1527 in Kalamazoo destroyed dozens of Thanksgiving meals for families in need.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said an officer on patrol spotted smoke coming from the VFW on Kilgore Road on Sunday.
“They’ve always tried to protect our post and it was on one of those patrols that the fire was spotted early enough to at least enclose it in the kitchen for the worst part," said Post 1527 Junior Vice Commander Carl Ogilvie.
Firefighters said an electrical fire that started in the ceiling burned the VFW's kitchen. “Disbelief was the feeling, sadness, anger it was a combination of things. It could have been far worse," VFW Post 1527 Commander Jon Carter said.
Carter said the majority of the damage was in the kitchen, where, unfortunately, they were keeping Thanksgiving meals for West Michigan families in need.
