Canton Township could be on path to building Michigan’s first net-zero fire station

A new addition to the township’s lineup of fire stations could also be Michigan’s first net-zero fire station. Although engineering is still in the research and planning phases, the Canton Township Planning Commission approved a site plan May 6 for a new fire station, the township’s fourth, at the southwest corner of Michigan Avenue and South Lilley Road. A fourth station has long been in the plan for the township, said Canton Township Fire Chief Christopher Stoecklein, and now that it's coming to fruition, the township's current board of trustees has also expressed interest in incorporating alternative energy to develop a full green energy net-zero station. “We’re researching to figure out the most cost-effective way of having alternative energy in the station,” Stoecklein said.

Fire crews rescued a man from his burning bed in his Antwerp Township home early Tuesday morning. The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office (VBCSO) said around 2:30 a.m. a man called 911 and said his bed was on fire but he couldn't get out of it and into his wheelchair. Crews were sent to his home in the 50000 block of 29 1/2 Street, deputies said. VBCSO said a Van Buren County sergeant was the first to arrive at the scene and had to kick in the man's door to get into the house. The home was filled with smoke but he was able to get to the back of it where the man was still in his smoldering bed. The sergeant carried him through the home and out the entrance, VBCSO said. Shortly after they made it out of the home, deputies said it became fully engulfed in flames. The man had burns on his legs and feet and suffered from smoke inhalation.
