PHOTO: Firefighters raced to put out a car fire in the parking lot of Hannaford on Forest Avenue in Portland Wednesday evening. The fire department said a hybrid vehicle caught fire just after 7 p.m. Firefighters said the potential for battery involvement in the fire "intensified the situation," but crews were able to contain the fire to the engine compartment. No other vehicles were damaged. Wednesday morning, firefighters in Lewiston handled two separate vehicle fires and said they have put out four vehicle fires in the last week, all unrelated. Investigators said three fires in Lewiston were caused by mechanical failure, and the other was still under investigation. There was also a car fire Tuesday morning along the Maine Turnpike near mile 65.
