A train derailed in Mattawamkeag Tuesday afternoon. Officials say a wheel from a derailed car clipped a fuel tank on the lead engine holding about 2500 gallons. It was determined that a significant amount of diesel fuel leaked from the tank. Railroad crews and Maine DEP responded to the spill. Officials say that the fuel did not spill into the nearby river and was concentrated on the ground and tracks. ”It took us probably 25 to 30 minutes to figure out where it was. It’s in an extremely different area to get at because of steep banks right there, so its hard to get down into the area. From what was discovered at first, when Lincoln got on scene, was a boxcar derailed. There’s two other boxcars, all of them carrying paper products,” explained Mattawamkeag Fire Chief, Michael Coombs. Mattawamkeag and Lincoln Fire Departments responded.
