The record number of new cases of COVID-19 announced last week in Worcester didn’t last long. On Wednesday City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. announced a new high-water mark for cases in the city. Since the last news conference — seven days ago — Worcester experienced 3,513 new COVID cases. On Wednesday alone the city reported 1,094 new cases. The city’s seven-day average is 501.8 cases. That’s about double from last week. The three numbers represent the highest totals since the start of the pandemic. They also don’t account for positive tests from at-home kits. The city’s two hospital systems — UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital — reported 22 new deaths since last week.
