At least half a dozen homes had to be evacuated as crews worked to contain a “significant” gas leak in Andover Tuesday, officials said. Emergency crews responding to Andover Street around 5:20 p.m. determined workers tearing down a home had cut an unknown gas line, according to the fire department. Eversource was able to temporarily cap the leak and the families were allowed to return to their homes around 7 p.m. Though service was not interrupted, the road will need to be dug up for more permanent repairs to be made. Those who were evacuated said it brought back memories of the Merrimack Valley Gas Disaster, which took place 3 years ago. “This was a lot less traumatic than the other one was,” said Dimitri Maistrellis. “Obviously, that one had a lot of repercussions and people got hurt. Thankfully nobody got hurt here.”
