Swampscott students in sixth grade and above will have the opportunity to learn about the town's fire department, its duties and get some hands-on training with apparatus and equipment during a new weeklong program.
The Swampscott Youth Fire Department Program runs next week with a maximum of 10 students and is a collaboration of Swampscott fire and Swampscott recreation.
Participants will learn about fire safety and apply what they've learned, learn about the trucks and personnel, work with various equipment, learn how to connect hoses to hydrants and control water flow, learn about extinguishers and rescue tools and more.
The program meets at the Swampscott Fire House on Burrill Street from 9 a.m. to noon next week.
