Fred Mitchell has stepped down as chief of the town’s fire department. His final day on duty was today.
Mitchell joined the Georgetown Fire Department in 2015 after 31 years in the fire service in Rhode Island. He will be assuming the role of chief with the Mansfield, Connecticut, Fire Department next month. His official last day is May 8.
In the 201 census, Mansfield had over three times the population of Georgetown; 26,543 versus 8,183.
During his time in Georgetown, Mitchell oversaw the addition of four full-time positions to the department, helped secure multiple Assistance to Firefighters grants for self-contained breathing apparatus and COVID-19 related personal protective equipment, as well as an information technology grant.
