Police and fire crews were evacuating buildings in the Mill Street area in Lawrence after a two-inch high pressure gas line was struck by a construction crew, the Fire Chief said. Eversource was called in to turn off gas to the area around 2:15 p.m. No injuries were reported. Officials are expected to allow people back into area buildings shortly, once gas levels are deemed safe. By 2:45 p.m. the fire chief said the incident appears under control but they are standing by with the gas company as a precaution. Eversource released this statement on Wednesday afternoon: “A 2" line hit was hit by a third-party contractor on Mill St. in Lawrence impacting a small number of customers. Working with the Fire Department, we immediately responded to shut the gas off and make the area safe and repairs are expected to take approximately 2 hours. Everyone who had been evacuated has been allowed back inside.”
