VIDEO: Police on Cape Cod investigating fiery crash in Hyannis


Police on Cape Cod are investigating a fiery single-vehicle crash in Hyannis, Massachusetts, that injured four people. Barnstable police said they were called at 1:15 a.m. to Smith Street. Video from the scene showed flames engulfing a sport utility vehicle. Fire officials said the SUV struck a utility pole and rolled several times before the vehicle caught on fire. One person suffered serious injuries and three suffered minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

Athol Fire Department receives new pumper truck


PHOTOS: The Fire Department has taken receipt of a new $825,000 pumper, the purchase of which was approved when voters last year passed a Proposition 2 ½ debt exclusion. According to Fire Chief Joseph Guarnera, the new pumper replaces a 26-year-old truck and was manufactured by Toyne Fire Apparatus of Breda, Iowa. “It contains battery-powered extrication tools, cribbing, power tools, hoses, a multitude of different hose adapters,” said the chief. “It was designed by our apparatus committee, so it was custom designed to purposely store the equipment we have.” Guarnera said the new pumper was designed to respond to structural fires, motor vehicle accidents, motor vehicle accidents with entrapment, rollovers, and ice and water rescues.

Cambridge Fire Academy holds graduation for Recruit Class 2024-01


PHOTOS: On Friday, May 10th, 20 recruit firefighters graduated in a nice ceremony at Boston College's Ellsworth Hall in Brookline. Family, friends, firefighters, and guests were in attendance. The class started on March 4, 2024, and after ten weeks of intense training, 20 firefighters graduated. Twelve of the graduates are from Cambridge Fire and eight are from Brookline Fire. Prior to the 10 weeks of fire training, the class members participated in 1 week of orientation & emergency medical training. Training was both classroom and hands-on and included hose handling, pump operation, water supply, ground & aerial ladder ops, tying & hauling of equipment, use of SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus), TIC (thermal imaging camera), search & rescue, firefighting, hi-rise ops, vehicle extrication, water rescue, hazardous materials ops, and much, much more.

Man dies of apparent drowning after canoe capsizes at Halifax lake, DA says


VIDEO: Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating the suspected drowning of a man in a Halifax lake after the canoe he was in capsized. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said that shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday, Halifax police received a 911 call reporting a capsized canoe with several people in the water at the East Lake boat ramp at 47 White Island Road. First responders found that three people, an adult and two children, had exited the water safely, but learned that another adult had not resurfaced. Halifax police officers and firefighters requested assistance from the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Dive Team and several local fire departments, including Duxbury and Marshfield, as well as the Massachusetts State Police detective unit assigned to Cruz's office. Cruz said that shortly after 12:40 p.m., the dive team found the man.

Area crews respond to bedroom fire in Granville


Emergency crews responded to a house fire in Granville on Saturday night. According to the Granville Fire Department, at around 9:18 p.m. firefighters were deployed to the scene of South Lane for reports of a blazing bedroom of the home. When crews arrived they found a fire in the second floor bedroom, and were able to confine the bulk of the fire to the bedroom with the help of mutual aid from other towns. Officials said everyone in the home was able to escape the fire, they were then evaluated and transported to a local hospital.

Springfield Central High School Students Honored for Burn Safety Videos


A Springfield Central High School student has won first prize in the Department of Fire Services’ annual Burn Awareness Video Contest and a second student received an honorable mention, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine said today. “In an average year, people under 18 account for more than 20% of burn-related emergency department visits in Massachusetts,” said State Fire Marshal Davine. “Many of these serious and even life-changing injuries can be prevented through awareness, education, and avoiding risky behavior. Our annual Burn Awareness Video Contest gives young people the chance to spread a positive safety message to their peers. I want to congratulate our winners and thank everyone who participated for supporting such an important cause.”
