Apparent transformer fire sends heavy smoke, flames pouring from street in Lowell


PHOTO: Heavy smoke and flames were seen pouring from the street in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, in an apparent transformer fire. Aerial video showed large clouds of black smoke and heavy flames coming from what appeared to be a transformer or dumpster in the area of Warren Street around 2:45 p.m. Firefighters had just arrived at the scene. A spokesperson says National Grid is investigating the cause of the fire and made the scene safe for first responders by cutting power to the transformer. About 120 customers were left without power, National Grid said.

Fire breaks out at Old Sea Pines Inn in Brewster


PHOTOS/VIDEO: Fire broke out at the Old Sea Pines Inn at 2553 Main Street (Route 6A) around 6:15 PM Monday. Flames were visible from the roof of a two-story section of the structure. A 2nd alarm brought in mutual aid from several towns to the scene. All occupants were able to safely evacuate the building. By 7:15 PM the fire was under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Brewster Fire and Rescue reports that Monday night at approximately 6:25 PM, they were dispatched to the Sea Pines Inn located at 2553 Main Street for a reported heavy smoke condition. On arrival units reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor and roof of a two-story wood frame dwelling attached to the main Sea Pines Inn building.

Hazardous materials incident snarls traffic on Mass Pike in Charlton


A hazardous materials incident on the Massachusetts Pike in Charlton snarled traffic in both directions Monday afternoon, officials said. A truck containing hazardous materials could be seen in the highway’s emergency lane. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services hazmat and special operations teams were on scene Monday evening, and Charlton fire crews supported. Fire crews entered the truck and were evaluating the situation, officials said. No injuries were reported. “Traffic in both directions is backed up, secondary roads are feeling the effects,” the Charlton Fire Department said in a Facebook post. MassDOT said one lane was closed in the area Monday night.

17 people displaced, following fire at Rainbow Motel in Whately


PHOTOS/VIDEO: Emergency crews responded to a structure fire in Whately on Saturday morning. According to the Whately Fire Chief, at around 12 a.m. firefighters were on scene for reports of a structure fire on State Road. 13 mutual aid fire companies helped to put out the second-alarm fire at the Rainbow Motel. Officials at the time closed Lasalle Road to Depot Road in Hatfield. The State Fire Marshal’s office said a preliminary investigation suggests there are no injuries reported and that the cause of the fire continues to be under investigation.

Manhole explosion reported in Everett, not far from Encore Boston Harbor


Firefighters and utility crews were spotted at an intersection that is about a half-mile away from Encore Boston Harbor resort and casino Saturday evening after a report of a manhole explosion in that area of Everett. Video shows multiple Everett Fire Department engines and National Grid vehicles at the intersection of Broadway and Bowdoin Street. Crews were on scene for just over an hour. Fire officials said the manhole explosion impacted an above-ground transformer near the Broadway and Bowdoin intersection. Some neighboring apartments showed high gas readings and were evacuated, but those residents have since been let back into their homes. A Cataldo Ambulance representative said one patient was transported to an area hospital in connection with the incident. It is unclear how badly that person was injured.

Crews put out train fire in Palmer


The Palmer Fire Department was called for an active train fire on Park Street early Sunday morning. According to the Palmer Fire Department, at 3:56 a.m. crews were sent to a report of a train engine fire on Park Street. When crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the engine compartment. The access panels were removed from the train and crews used dry chemical extinguishers to put out the fire. A hose line was used to overhaul the area after it was confirmed that the power to the engine was off. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
