The New Orleans Fire Department responded to a 2-alarm fire in the 1000 block of Howard Avenue Saturday morning.
Firefighters were notified around 8 a.m. that the Plaza Tower high rise was on fire.
According to NOFD, the first company arrived minutes later and began a search of the building. It has been vacant for years, but firefighters say they were concerned that vagrants or squatters could be inside.
No injuries were reported, and the fire was under control by 8:30 a.m.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office will assist the NOFD in determining the cause of the fire. So far, several points of origin have been identified.
WDSU has reported extensively on the abandoned building built in the late 1960s.
In May of last year, debris fell from it, injuring a passing bicyclist.
