Firefighters come to the rescue in an emergency, but are they fairly compensated for the often life-saving work they do? Monroe Firefighters Association President Jeremy Hinton doesn't think so. Hinton cited a study on social media that compared Alexandria Fire Department salaries with other agencies in the state, in which Monroe did not compare favorably with cities of Monroe's size. Hinton said new hires in the Monroe Fire Department earn just over $25,000 per year. "New hires for Monroe fire start at $1,405 monthly from the City and the sales tax contributes $695 monthly to bring our base pay up to $2,100 monthly or $25,200 yearly," Hinton said. "Combined from the City and the sales tax a new hire makes $8.63 hourly. From the city budget a new hire makes $16,860 yearly or $5.77 hourly. The amount the city budget contributes on base pay has been the same since the late 90's. Not even minimum wage from the City budget."
