VIDEO: Shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, crews from Overland Park and Leawood Fire Departments were called to a house fire at 180th and Canterbury Road, in south Overland Park near 183rd and Mission Road. The first crews to arrive reported heavy smoke and fire visible from the two-story, single-family home. Neighbors reported that the homeowners were away and that no one was inside. Because of a collapsing roof and unstable walls, crews initiated a defensive fire attack, meaning they fought the fire from outside the home. A second alarm was called for additional manpower. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, crews were able to get inside to begin overhaul operations and conduct a search to confirm that no one was inside. It took firefighters about two hours to bring the fire under control.
