Axelton Hill Road fire consumes 3,000 acres, multiple buildings in Riley County

Local officials have released new information regarding a wildfire in Riley County that’s scorched hundreds of acres of land over the weekend. The Riley County government issued a press release Monday morning on the Axelton Hill Road fire which is still burning. However, local homeowners who were told to evacuate have been allowed to return to their homes while firefighters continue to monitor the fire. Currently, no homes are threatened by the fire. Riley County spokeswoman Vivienne Leyva says more than 3,000 acres have burned in Riley County due to the wildfire. One home was destroyed along with several other buildings but no injuries were reported. The fire began in nearby Pottawatomie County and moved over to Riley County near Axelton Hill Road on the night of April 5. Multiple local and state firefighters responded to the situation.
