Crews closed a portion of 2nd Street near I-135 in Wichita on Tuesday due to natural gas detected outside the sewer system.
Kansas Gas Service confirms there was not a leak on the Kansas Service Pipeline.
The fire department tweeted at around 11 a.m. that it was assisting police with closing 2nd Street between I-135 and Piatt. Battalion Chief Lane Pearman said the gas service had detected natural gas on one of their routine checks.
"About 11 o'clock this morning, the Wichita Fire Department received a call originating from one of the gas service companies who was reporting a leak. They had detected on one of their routine checks some natural gas here at 2nd and I-135," Pearman said. “They thought they had detected a high concentration of natural gas in the storm sewer, which obviously that would cause us some concern," Pearman said.
