Firefighters responded to a fire Tuesday afternoon at Babcock Place apartments at 17th and Massachusetts streets, where residents were briefly displaced. Administration Division Chief Tom Fagan, a spokesman for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, told the Journal-World the fire was under control shortly after 1 p.m., about 45 minutes after firefighters arrived. He said no injuries had been reported. Though no flames were visible from the ground, firefighters were seen on the roof of the retirement complex via a ladder truck, and Massachusetts Street was shut down at that intersection as they worked. Fire Chief Shaun Coffey said the fire on the roof appeared to be coming from a top-floor apartment, but the cause was unknown. The department’s investigation team was working to determine the cause, but it might not be determined on Tuesday, Fagan said.
