Overland Park fire crews rescue man from trench

VIDEO: Overland Park police and fire crews responded Tuesday morning to a trench collapse. Crews were called shortly before 10 a.m. to the 13100 block of Goodman Street. A fire department spokesperson said the first units on the scene noted one man was buried up to his waist in the trench, where he was about 15-feet below grade. While Olathe and Consolidated Fire District No. 2 crews helped stabilize the trench, Overland Park firefighters used hand shovels to dig the victim out, OPFD shared. Fire crews said the man was conscious and alert during the rescue. Additionally, he walked out of the trench with assistance after he was freed. OPFD said Johnson County MED-ACT reported the man was being transported to an area hospital in stable condition. Investigation into the collapse is ongoing.

Vacant home damaged in west Wichita fire

A vacant home burned in west Wichita on Tuesday. The fire happened at the house near 135th Street West and Central around 10:20 p.m. Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief John Eck tells KSN News that a security guard in a neighborhood reported the fire. When crews arrived, the home was heavily involved. “We did have to bring some extra units out because we don’t have fire hydrants in this area. We are sitting way back off the road, so we had what we call a tender that brings 2,500 gallons of water on each of those,” Eck said. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

Explosion in Sharon cellar injures three

VIDEO: Kim Sibley and three others were burning wood and garbage in a cellar in his backyard in Sharon, when things took a terrifying turn. "The back window, and the side window got blown out in a little explosion," Sibley said. "I mean, I mean a big explosion. It was scary." Sibley's girlfriend's son in law, and two other people were badly burned in the explosion, but the Kansas Fire Marshal's office said that they're going to be okay. "One agent was in route to the hospital to try to interview individuals that would have been there," said Fire Marshal Spokesman Lance Feyh. "I think we had two males and one female unknown ages at this point." Feyh said that it's easy for a controlled burn to get out of hand in an enclosed area. "Clearly, when you think of the control burn most the time, individuals thinking about burning like a field, or prairie grass fire sort of thing," Feyh said. "This happened to be a structure."
