VIDEO: The construction on the new Mishawaka Fire Station No. 2 is on schedule for a fall opening!
The city is calling this the largest expenditure for the fire department in its history, according to our reporting partners at the South Bend Tribune. The new building will be 25,000 square feet and will have five bays and state-of-the-art barriers to separate the equipment from the living quarters.
The station will also give firefighters more means to prevent toxic chemical exposure, with updated quarters featuring decontamination areas, washers-dryers to clean dirty equipment, and more sets of gear, allowing them to change when needed.
The space will also feature a new community room for public events and a place for the Survive Alive House, which seeks to educate children on fire safety.
