VIDEO: A local family woke up to a knock on their door after an off-duty firefighter with the Pierson Fire Department noticed smoke coming from a residential attic space. According to J.C. Gummere, Chief of the Pierson Township Fire Department, the call reporting the fire was initially made by the off-duty Pierson Township firefighter after getting the family out of the house. The call came in around 9:10 on Friday morning, and crews were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the area of 12000 State Road 59, with Pierson and Riley Fire Departments responding to the scene. “The firefighter that was there on scene, knocked on the door and got the family out,” Gummere said. “They were sleeping. So the people in the house were saved.” The family will be displaced for a few days, but Gummere believes the house is salvageable.
