Local firefighters are urging residents to do their part to prevent brush fires. “We’re starting to get into that fall weather, brush fire awareness,” North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Chief Joe Leszek told the town council Monday. “If it’s windy, it’s really dry, don’t burn. Use common sense. Keep your fires maintained. So hopefully, that’ll cut down on some of our brush fires this year.” He said firefighters will be visiting schools and daycares, as part of Fire Prevention Month. Meanwhile, in his report as town superintendent, Leszek reminded residents about fall brush pickup. “Brush pickup shouldn’t be larger than three inches [around], about five-inch-tall [piles],” he said. “We’re still getting some brush piles out there that someone’s clearing out stuff, and it’s taking a backhoe and a couple dump truck loads to get their brush gone.”
