The Honolulu Fire Department is investigating after a “smoldering” fire at a high-rise apartment fire in Moiliili triggered evacuations Monday. HFD said it initially received a call just before 5 p.m. for a flooding situation on Kahoaloha Lane. Upon arrival, officials said firefighters found water flowing out the side of the ninth floor of the 24-story high-rise apartment building. The incident commander also found light smoke billowing from one of the units along with a dislodged floor-to-ceiling glass window hanging from the building. Firefighters accessed the unit and found the smoke emanating from behind the kitchen cabinets. HFD said after removing the cabinets and breaching the interior wall, “a smoldering fire was discovered in between structural members.”
